Petition For Mandatory CCTV In Slaughterhouses

As Paul McCartney so famously said, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls everyone would be vegetarian.”

For years Animal Liberation has exposed the hidden brutality that often happens over and above the already terrible suffering animals endure in the lead up to their slaughter. All too often because of their absolute vulnerability they are the victims of viciousness by people who enjoy inflicting pain and who need to feel “superior” to animals who cannot retaliate, who cannot speak for themselves. We would like to believe this happens “over there” but that would be naïve. It happens right here as has been exposed all too frequently.

The only way the treatment of animals can be properly monitored in slaughter houses is to, in effect; make them transparent by installing CCTV in all abattoirs.

One in five abattoirs in the U.K. killing cows, pigs, goats and sheep now have CCTV. These are responsible for nearly half the red meat obtained from UK slaughterhouses. Just fewer than 30% of poultry slaughterhouses – accounting for 59% of birds – also have CCTV. Ministers are considering making CCTV compulsory in slaughterhouses in England, Scotland and Wales to help enforce laws against animal cruelty.

We are calling for the same for animals in Australia.
