Today Tonight, together with Animal Liberation, expose the brutality of wild goat racing. On Friday 21 October 2011, Today Tonight again aired the shocking realities of wild goat racing events taking place in outback NSW. After 3 investigations into the cruel “sport” of wild goat racing, Animal Liberation has successfully shut down Coolabah goat races and Lightning Ridge goat races, while Bundarra goat races are still pending. For the latest investigation Animal Liberation took Today Tonight and reporter Helen Wellings to a goat race in Woolbrook near Tamworth NSW so they too could see the horrors of these events. Yet this time Animal Liberation investigators had to contend with prepared organisers aware of last year’s expose. Threats were made, acts of intimidation, and accusations were fired from organisers, clearly mindful that any footage obtained would be incriminating. It seems that despite awareness of the cruelty inherent in goat races, they continued to run their event.
It’s only a matter of time before the organisers of one of these events are prosecuted for animal cruelty, and they are clearly aware of this. The small amount of footage we did obtain has evidence of numerous accounts of cruelty to animals. We witnessed goats tethered by very short ropes, goats dragged by the tips of their horns and goats vocalising and shaking in fear. These are all breaches of either the Code of Practice and/or POCTA (the Protection of Cruelty to Animals Act). Animal Liberation will continue to expose these hideous events and work with the police to ensure they are shut down and/or organisers are prosecuted for animal cruelty.
