35th Anniversary Dinner - May 2011

35th Anniversary Black Tie Fundraising Dinner

It’s hard to believe now but when Christine Townend had her first meeting and formed Animal Liberation 35 years ago, only 5 people turned up to a tiny office in the Rocks, Sydney.  This was before the internet, before computers in most homes and offices, when this core group had to band together to purchase a typewriter.  From small acorns do mighty oaks grow.  This remarkable woman took on all forms of intensive farming including mutilation of animals and the transport of live animals. She was derided and underestimated – they pilloried her and predicted her mission would be short lived.  They were wrong.  Christine Townend’s passion and intellect, her softly spoken tenacity were not going away.

Today we celebrate the organisation she started and the hundreds of thousands of people who join us across the world in this, the last great social change.

This was the first organisation in Australia and one of the few in the world to promulgate the rights of animals rather than welfare.  The first to speak out for all species and advocate not eating and wearing them, using them for experimentation or “entertainment” – not using them for anything at all, just respecting their intrinsic right to be.

To commemorate the occasion of our 35th year we came together at Blackstone Pizza and Bar to enjoy vegan food and wine and listen to the exquisite playing of internationally renowned cellist Georg Pedersen (he is also vegan!) and tap our toes and bop to the joyful renditions of violin and guitar and the angel voices of Lara Goodridge and Joy Howard (also vegan and animal rights).

We were supported generously by Damon from Blackstone Pizza who went out of his way to ensure a great night was had by all and delicious food and in no particular order:
Macquarie Dale Wines, LEDA Nutrition, Cruelty Free Shop, Sweet William, Nature’s Organics, Organic Formulations, Orange Power, Orgran “NoEgg,” Pet Soy Candles, Natio, Pure Gaisha, City Desktop, Linda Williams, Celia Jervis, Elsie Quinn, Christine Townend and Daisy and Honey Green.
