In December 2009, the NHMRC lifted Australia's five-year moratorium on xenotransplantation (animal-to-human transplants). The use of animal parts in humans carries serious animal welfare implications, requiring animals to be purpose-bred and killed in laboratories, as well as creating the potential for the spread of new retroviruses throughout Australia.
