The Chicken Gave It To MeBy Ann Fine. Taken at face value this is a tender and touching story of a chicken who flies frillions of miles to try and save us humans. This tale is written from a hen's perspective where humans are given a taste of their own medicine by being treated, and eaten, like we now treat them. Don't get me wrong, your child will not wake up with nightmares from reading this witty and wonderful story of hope. And as it is not heavy-handed it is suitable for children of all ages. For adults it cleverly encompasses ethical questions that to this day are still being grabbled with. The author, Ann Fine, a winner of the Carnegie Medal and Smarties Award, is superb at inspiring understanding and respect for the battery hen. She has taken responsibility to ensure that every child that reads this simple and delightful book for once will be told the truth. This precious resource is a rare commodity in itself. On another level animal liberationists will be able to identify with the way the author weaves her magic enabling you to place yourself in the shoes of another sentient being. This is a great little book and should be in every school library around the country.
