Diet For A New America

Diet For A New America

When 'Diet for a New America' hit the bookstores back in 1987 it caused a storm, not only in America but worldwide. Few of us are aware that the act of eating can be a powerful statement of commitment to our well-being, and at the same time to the creation of a healthier world.

This book is a fascinating journey into institutionalised cruelty, namely factory farming. Robbins is gifted with the talent of showing us why a humane society cannot be built upon an inhumane system of food production.

Like non other before him Robbins successfully juxtaposes animal rights with environmental and health-care issues which do not play on our guilt or weaknesses as a species but opens up numerous possibilities that perhaps have previously required developing new sensibilities to non-human life.

This book is made ever more interesting because John Robbins father is the 'Robbins' of the ice-cream Baskin-Robbins fame.

Where action speaks louder than words John Robbins (the son) chose to put that lifestyle behind him in search of real values. He tells a funny story around that time when there was a standard joke in their family. He went on to say that the closer our family ever got to 'roughing it' was if room service was late. He became founder of Earthsave International, a non-profit organisation that supports healthy food choices, preservation of the environment, and a more compassionate world. We can't argue with that.

Riveting reading.
