Dear Supporter,
Please send a thank you to Mayor Pettitt.
Through campaigning by Stop Live Exports and Animal Liberation, the City of Fremantle made an historic decision to support a phase out of live exports. Animal Liberation (NSW) activists were in Fremantle only a few months ago in a direct action blockading the ‘Al Kuwait’ from entering the port to collect 110,000 sheep for The Eid festival sacrifice.
Please send a thank you to Brad Pettitt, Mayor of Fremantle for his role in this wonderful decision. mayor@fremantle.wa.gov.au
Of the nearly 4 million Australian sheep exported around 80 per cent of them go through the port of Fremantle. This motion is not designed to move the trade south from Fremantle to Kwinana. The City of Fremantle wants it stopped altogether.
We welcome Fremantle Council taking this strong stance against live exports. There are many animal welfare concerns with this trade, and despite industry claims, very little improvement to animal welfare has been made. Live export is a cruel industry. There is well-documented evidence of the suffering of animals. All three levels of Government in Fremantle are now opposed to live animal exports. This landmark decision is indicative of what can result through public pressure. Please email Mayor Pettitt to say thank you for his decision for those animals who face horror in the live export trade to the Middle East.
