Victory for Pigs - Nov 2010

Animal Liberation scores major victory for pigs

Thirty-five years of campaigning by Animal Liberation has finally paid off. Today Australian Pork Limited (APL) voted to phase out the use of sow stalls in Australia by 2017.

This win is the culmination of a long-term campaign by Animal Liberation which has included piggery raids, public education, meetings with retailers and lobbying of government and industry. Finally the intensive pig industry has been brought to its knees by a combination of campaigning, veterinary science, consumer pressure and the resulting assertive decisions by retailers.

Animal Liberation has been at the forefront of exposing cruelty to pigs in factory farms for three decades.

The battle is not over yet

The 2017 ban, though not ideal for pigs, clearly indicates that most breeding sows will be freed from the barbaric practice of sow stalls from 2014 but we will continue to campaign to bring that ban deadline even closer.

Ironically, three Animal Liberation NSW activists are currently facing charges in the Supreme Court for exposing conditions in piggeries. It is this type of exposure which has been instrumental in letting the public and media know about conditions in intenstive piggeries.

Help us continue to campaign for pigs

Animal Liberation receives no government funding and relies solely on donations to continue its work exposing cruelty to animals. Please donate now so we can continue helping intensively farmed pigs and all animals in need.
