Wild Goat Racing - Oct 2010

Over the last year, Animal Liberation investigators have witnessed one of the cruellest animal abusing 'sports' in Australia: feral goat racing.

Frightened, wild goats are captured, auctioned off, teased and tormented to make them appear more 'fierce', dragged across the raceway and harnessed to a cart. Children as young as 4 years old are encouraged to be 'jockeys' and the adults place their bets. The goats and children are released, and chaos occurs.

Children are thrown off carts; frightened goats collapse onto the ground, or run into the crowd. Goats crash head first into fences, some goats bleeding, some goats knocking themselves unconscious, while the children lay on the ground in a foetal position attempting to tend to their injuries. The crowd cheers, and soon, the next race will begin.

The good news...

After a veterinarian advised Animal Liberation that footage taken at this event showed evidence of aggravated cruelty to animals, police assisted Animal Liberation to close this event down.

On Tuesday the 26th of October 2010, Channel 7's Today Tonight lifted the lid on this cruel spectacle, airing footage obtained by Animal Liberation investigators. Viewers across Australia were horrified, and the RSPCA and Today Tonight were both inundated with calls. In response, Today Tonight aired a follow up story the next evening. We will keep you updated with this campaign as we hear further news.

Animal Liberation is the only organisation attempting to stop this hideous cruelty. Your donation will go directly to ensuring these animals will not suffer like this again.
